Evaluation By Nathan Lawrence

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

4. Who would be the audience of your media product?

5.How did you attract/address your audience?

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

7.Looking back at your prelimary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progresion from it to the full product?

1. Our product sufficiently meets the conventions of real life media product, i believe it is realistic and effective, in what we set out to do.There is a close-up shot of the text message that she had received. There is also digetic sound throughout the product such as the birds singing, the wind blowing and the wood snapping in the forest. This shows that there is normal everyday things happening. As the girl's father was unable to collect the girl, she had to take the easy way home by taking the short route through the forest. Our media product challenged forms through conventions of real media products by creating tension throughout, as the genre is thriller, the audience were made to believe that someone is following the girl, and certain shots such as medium and close-up are shown of the 'suspect' who is following the girl.

2.Our media product represents young people, from the age of 16 upwards. The product is exciting and easy to watch therefore it relates to this age. The main character is also of a similar age and therefore the audience should be able to relate to the product.

3. The sequence is aimed at mainstream production companies who have experince in producign thriller films. A production company such as DNA films who have made films such as 28 days later which prooved to be extremly poplular amongst young people.

4. The audience for our product would be teens, form the age of 15 to 20, hopefully because it is quite gripping it would be successful in engaging the audience, i think because the main character is also a teenager and the film is set in school it would be easier for the audience to relate to.

5. Hopefully by using the a teenage character and a storyline which would appeal to the audience, i think by also using an appealing story-line it would engage and audience of this age.

6. Throughout the Task i learnt a lot through the duration of the task, firstly i learnt how essential it is to plan the process thoroughly so that any mistake or uncertainties can be rectified easily. I also think that by using the camera, i have learnt a great deal about positioning, using a tripod, and zooming effectively.

Evaluation Questions and Answers.

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
There are many way where our media product uses, develops and challenges forms through the conventions of real media products. This is shown throughout, when the girl is waiting for her father to pick her up from school. The close-up shot shows her facial expression which is impatient and fed up, that her father is late, and she is getting quite worried and anxious. Sound is also used throughout the media product where her mobile phone 'beeps'. This shows that she has a text message , and unfortunately. her father is unable to collect her from school. There is a close-up shot of the text message that she had received. The mise-en-scene shows that the girl is in a school as she is wearing her school uniform, and her prop is the folder that she is carrying with her. Also, there are shots and panning of the school buildings and the playground . In the editing, there are quick cuts in the media product to show realism through the media product.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product is aimed at young teenagers from 15 years upwards. This is because the main character in the media product is a school girl, so the audience will be able to relate to the character. The media product represents the social group of young teenagers in a negative way as it shows that they are not aware of their surroundings and safety around themselves.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The kind of media institution that might distribute our media product would be a film distribution comapny that normally release thriller films for mainstream cinemas because they seem to be very popular with young people today.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
The ideal audience for our media product would be young people from 15 years upwards, where both genders are accepted to watch the film, because this is the target group where thriller is a genre which is particular popular and enjoyable to watch with friends at the cinema.

5) How did you attract/address your audience?
We attracted/addressed the audience by making the media product set in a school, where most of us can relate to the main character because she is a young schoolgirl, and is an ideal working class character for the type of target audience that has been chosen. Also, knowing how teenager minds are all the same, the target audience will be able to predict what will happen next.

6) What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learned a lot about the technologies from the process of constructing this product, as i have learned how to use a digital camera for filming, and how to to the different types of camera shots such as close-up by zooming in, and medium/long shot by zooming out etc. I have also learned how to use the imovie program by importing the film onto the computer, and using the editing program to cut shots, change the lighting and use different effects.

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it, to the full product?
Looking back at the preliminary task, i feel that i have learned a lot in the progression from it , to the full product. It has taught me how to be more organized in the planning stage by using a storyboard which makes the filming more easier, as i would know what shots to do in the full product. I have also learned about the use of mise-en scene and how it has a big effect to the genre of the film that is made. I have learned the importance of planning- when it'sapproapriate to shoot certain scenes, and the time management as well, also i have learned the importance of using a tripod and faming with the digital camera as it makes the shots look more professional and clean cut. I have also learned how to use the imovie editing program to use a selection of mise-en-scene shots and continually editing techniques which shows a sense of realism.

Answers

1.Our media product is the opening sequence for a thriller film. At the beginning of the sequence a medium shows shows the main character a teenage girl looking quickly from side to side she is standing behind a brown door. She begins to walk forward but then walks back to leaning on a brick wall, waiting to be picked up. The close up shots reveal that she is anxious and quite impatient because no one has arrived yet.

The mise en scene shows that she must be at her school as the camera pans out to reveal other buildings and a playground. The diegetic sound that can be heard is the birds singing and the leaves blowing in the wind. This helps to maintain the realistic feel of the atmosphere. The sound of the beeping from her mobile phone signals that she has a new text message. A close up shot reveals the screen of her mobile phone which displays the message from her dad who is unable to collect her from school. With no choice but to make her own way home she resorts to take a short cut through the forest. As the genre of this film is supposed to be a thriller, we intended to build up the suspense when she walks through the forest. In order for this suspense to be created it is essential that the correct sound was used otherwise it would not have the same effect. In this way our media product has develop and challenged forms and conventions of real products because it shows a very ordinary situation of a naïve teenage girl which could be viewed as stereotypical but in many media products this is portrayed in many of the storylines.

2. Our media product represents young people, from the age of 16 upwards. The audience is able to relate to the main character as she is a teenage girl but she is represented in a negative way. This is because she is seen walking alone through a forest and it likely that she is in great danger. But this is what the audience would expect to see as this is the narrative in many films, so this relates well.

3. The opening sequence of this film is targeted for mainstream cinemas as there are many films with a similar narrative. The most likely distributor for this film would be Dimension Films as they have released many thriller films such as Jeepers Creepers and Scream. Both of these films have proven to be extremely popular amongst young people.

4. This film would appeal to all young people between the ages of 16-25 boys and girls would enjoy this film because thriller films are very popular with young people today. It is important that this film does appeal to both genders as it widens the potential target audience.

5. We were able to attract our audience by using the main character the teenage girl someone who they would be able to relate to. Her costume revealed that she was a schoolgirl so the audience immediately recognise her character and are able to make some suggestions about what might happen.

Audience Feedback

Strengths:
• good titles – original and creative looking
• variety of camera shots, mystery maintained when only the back of the mystery character was shown
• good editing – the camera shots flow together well
• diegetic sound helped to maintain tension,
• suitable mise en scene – realistic to the situation

Improvements:

• more sound effects to create more suspense
• quicker pace of sequence so that audience will feel more sense od danger like main character.

6. I have learnt that the filming process gives you the opportunity to leave the camera rolling to do retakes. During the editing process you have the chance to cut out the shots you don’t need and use different types of effects on the software such as: ‘Earthquake’ and change it from colour to black and white. I know how to use the video camera and tripod and how to upload the video unto the computer properly. I also experimented with the Garageband software on iTunes to see how you can make your own music. This software was very useful becuase it has many different feratures sucha s: sound effects and a wide range of instruments. I would have like to have made some music for the opening sequence but we did not have enough time and the software in quite hard to use.

7. I think that this opening sequence is a much bigger improvement from the preliminary task. We have used a variety of shots to make it more interesting and made use of diegetic sound to enhance the verisimilitude of the film. Even though the editing process is probably the most difficult and time consuming I feel more comfortable with cutting out unwanted shots and have become quite familiar with the i-movie HD software. I have realised the importance of including the conventions of thriller films in this sequence as it helps to improve the standard of the sequence. More importantly, I understand that planning is by far the most important as it helps to speed up the filming process. I also think that we could have made it a bit scarier, perhaps we could have filmed later in the evening when it was darker to create a more sinsiter atmosphere. I think this would have been quite effective in the forest location.

Gangster Conventions

A gangster film is very similar to a crime film. It involves various aspects of crime and the criminal justice system, and it is developed around the sinister actions of criminals or gangsters. Crime stories in this genre often highlight the life of a crime figure or a crime's victim. Or they glorify the rise and fall of a particular criminal, gang, bank robber, murderer or a rival gang.

Settings:
  • Dark locations
  • Busy cities
  • Urban Lifestyles
  • The Slums- 'living in poverty'
Narrative:
  • Action
  • Violence/murder
  • Rivalry between gangs
  • Comedy?
  • Foul language/slang
  • Money
  • Drugs
  • Weapons (guns,knives...)
Characters:
  • Gangs
  • Individual characters
  • Leader of group
  • Criminals/drug dealers
  • Gamblers
  • Victims (innocent or even involved in the crime)
  • Gangs from ethnic backgrounds
  • The young or old ?
Gangster Films:
  • Snatch
  • The Godfather
  • American Gangster
  • The Departed
  • Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
In our group (Trisha, Yazzmin and Nathan), we decided to analyse a gangster film called 'Snatch', and how this film contributes to the different gangster conventions.

From the opening scene of 'Snatch', there are many points that we can immediately tell that it's a gangster movie, such as:
  • The props: there are weapons such as hand guns which are used in the film to attack the rivals.
  • There are fighting skills as well to show that there is a lot of action.
  • The mise-en-scene starts off with a dark setting- which shows that there is something mysterious that is going to happen.
  • The group move around together as a gang- no one is alone, which shows that they are going to start trouble.
  • The music when fighting is very dramatic and also there are many sound effects such as throwing objects around and punching.
  • They unexpected Jewish folk music which turns into action- very unexpected.
From the credits and the characters of the film, we can immediately see that Guy Ritchie directed the film. This makes us to expect that it will be a very good and successful film. The sub genre of this gangster film would be a British gangster film. as the characters acting are British. Older teenagers and adults would be the audience for the film since the age certificate is '18

Main Task

Research and Planning

As a group we have decided that the genre for our opening sequence will be thriller, which is a sub genre of horror. In order for the opening sequence to be successful we will need to provide some research about the conventions for horror films.

This will enable us to create an exciting and imaginative opening sequence that will leave the audience in suspense and anticipation. Many of the conventions for horror films will be included in the opening sequence but not all of them.

RESEARCH OF DIFFERENT GENRES

In class, we looked at a variety of opening sequences showing different genres. The first opening sequence we looked at was taken from the DVD Seven (1995).

It is an American crime thriller starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. It was easy to identify that this was a crime film within a few seconds of it starting. Many of the conventions of a crime film were included in this opening sequence so the audience would immediately be able to recognise which genre it fitted into.

Clip:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l31X8rKCtak

Opening sequence of Seven:

  • Dark setting- dull lighting in the kitchen,

  • He picks up his badge- we can tell that he is a policeman/detective,there is a pen knife

  • Beside it,we see a dead body lying on the floor-blood,

  • Costume-Morgan Freeman is wearing a 'detective' hat suit and jacket, Brad Pitt is wearing similar clothing-suit and tie.

  • The bad weather-raining and gloomy contributes to the crime thriller atmosphere

  • Close up shots of the criminal reveal that this film will have a sinister plot,

  • Flashing titles, quick cross cutting emphasises and creates suspense and tension.
We also looked at a variety of other opening sequences which genres included: comedy, sci-fi,war and horror. Our group were given the task of researching gangster conventions and finding a suitable opening sequence that would fit into the conventions for a gangster film. The film that we chose to analyse the opening sequence was Snatch.

The clips of the opening sequences that we watched are as follows:

I have decided to research the conventions of comedy films. Below, I have included examples of some comedy films and given a brief analysis for the opening sequence for the film AceVentura: Pet Detective.

Comedy Conventions

Definition: A type of film where humour is intended. There are many different sub genres of comedy which include romantic, action, fantasy, sci-fi and military.

Examples of sub genres in comedy films:

Romantic comedies:

Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001)

Action comedies:

Fantasy comedies:

Sci-fi :

Analysis of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

The opening sequence that we looked at from the film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was an example of an action comedy. It stars Jim Carey,an actor who we would usually associate in comedy films so the opening sequence is expected to generate laughter from the audience.

It begins with an extreme close up shot of his shoes walking along the pavement and the titles begin to show. The camera pans up from the feet upwards to show the body of the main characrer which is Jim Carey. His character is a delivery man and you can easily see this from his costume. He is wearing a brown uniform that has a badge above the left breast pocket Then some
lively music starts to play and this contributes to the comedy.
The mise en scene shows a sunny location as there are plam trees and a bright yellow apartment block. The medium shot of Carey throwing a parcel in the air while walking down the road tells us that his character is not a serious one. The title of the movie appears after a long shot of Carey still walking along the pavement. The long shots show him doing cartwheels along the pavement and running the parcel along a wall clearly with the intention to destroy it. His behaviuor causes an elderly man to stare at him in bewilderment a cut a way shot reveals his shocked reaction.

We watched the opening sequence up until 5:00 minutes where the opening titles begin.

Starring: Jason Statham, Brad Pitt, Vinnie Jones, Dennis Farina,Lennie James.

Age Rating : 18

Target audience: teenagers, adults, usually in the 18-25 category but this film will be enjoyed by anyone who likes watching gangster films.

Analysis of the opening sequence:

  • Begins with two men sitting in a dark room, known as Turkish and Tommy

  • There is no music, narrator’s commentary- non diegetic

  • The dark setting creates suspense

  • We know that these two men are criminals from their clothing

  • Close up of shots of their facial expressions and body language reveal that there is more to their character

  • The Jewish men can be seen on cctv walking into jewellers so the audience assumes that there are imposters and will attempt to cause a scene

  • They move together in a group which adds to the suspicion about their true identity

  • Music is played as soon as they enter the building (traditional folk music) which contributes to the stereotype of their characters – entertaining for the audience

  • The lively music stops as soon as the men enter the back room, fast action music begins so the audience is aware that the men are in fact criminals- tension builds up and meets our expectations.

  • The men strip off their costumes and pull out guns- violence is associated with criminals.

Prelim Task- Evaluation Questions

1.Which aspect of the planning did you find valuable? Explain.
2. What did you learn about camerawork during the practical filming of the preliminary task?
3.How did the editing process contribute to your understanding of the construction of a media task?
4. What are your overall impressions of the construction of your media text in your group?

1. Using the storyboard to begin planning was very useful because it gave you the opportunity to get an idea of what different types of camera shots to use and thinking about which locations would be the most suitable when filming the sequence.

2. I learnt how to hold and position the camera but most of all I learnt that camera work can be very time consuming and it is not as easy as it looks, for example many retakes had to be done to make sure that there were a variety of shots to choose from. When we filmed for the first ,it did not take very long to complete and we uploaded it very quickly unto the computer. Unfortunately, we discovered that the film had not been saved properly on the computer, so this meant that we had to film the sequence again. It did not take a long time to complete as we knew what we had to do so filming it again was quite straight forward.

3.The editing process was equally both interesting and beneficial in terms of understanding more about the construction of the sequence. It was exciting to watch the sequence being played because it showed that we had included a good range of shots and it looked quite realistic. It took more time during the editing process that the actual filming because editing requires a lot of time and you have to be very precise when cutting out the scenes you do not want to use at the correct time.

4. I think that the camerawork was done very well and suitable shots were used howeverI feel that a longer time spent filming would ensure that other types of shots could be included and perhaps the sequence could be a bit longer.

16.1.09- Katie Vandermark

1) Which aspect of the planning stage did you find most valuable?  Explain.

I found the storyboard planning essential during the initial filming of our preliminary task as it saved time, our group did not need to decide which shots we were filming or how to film them as we had already decided during planning.
All of our shots had been decided, which helped as we filmed our piece in a different sequence than planned, for example we shot all our outside shots first and then shot indoors.  This meant that we knew the order of our shots when it came to editing.
Our storyboard became especially helpful once we had filmed our preliminary task as our computer did not save our initial piece, therefore our group knew we had a limited amount of time to film in order to fit in time for editing.  We used the storyboard and our knowledge of the past piece and were able to create this easily and quickly without any problems.  For this reason in particular storyboard planning helped our group.

It was also helpful to watch previous media preliminary tasks as we could understand what looked professional and what did not.  It allowed us to take these into account while planning on our storyboard and choose which shots we wanted to include and which ones we did not want to choose as they either looked unprofessional or would have taken up too much of our filming time.

2) What did you learn about camerawork during the practical filming of the preliminary task?

The only problem we came across during filming was that if we chose to shoot with a handheld camera our hands were continuously shaking and it gave the shot a unprofessional look.  After watching the shot back we decided to shoot all of our text using the tripod, which helped our group immensely as we then could shoot using a level and straight camera, in order to stop the shaking and also allow all of our shots to be straight.  The tripod allowed us to raise and lower the camera while still keeping a straight shot, and also allow our shots to all be the same when filming certain scenes several times consecutively.  Using the tripod helped us during the editing process as our shots were all equal and matched up to the same level as the proceeding shots.
I also learned how to manage filming shots without them being in the same order, in which our storyboard was helpful.  I learned that as a group we were able to film scenes which were in the same setting at the same time, even if they were not consecutively after each other.  For example, we had to shoot over 2 days as our initial film did not save onto the computer and when we came to shoot we knew we had a limited time before we had to begin editing so we chose to shoot all the outside sequences before the indoor sequences and then edit them into an order during the editing process.

3) How did the editing process contribute to your understanding of the construction of a media text?

The editing process was of the biggest importance as I could then see that our media text was not completed by just filming.  Editing took up most of our time and we all had the opportunity to edit certain shots, which was helpful to us all.
By editing this preliminary task it helped me to understand the best way to film, by filming each sequence several times and choosing the best shot of each sequence, which would allow us to have the best of all our shots.
I understood that editing took more time than the filming, which will allow us to have better time management during our main task.
Editing to the accurate split-second was also vital, if we edited our text with a matter of being 2 seconds longer it was clear where the cut was.  Similarly if we edited and cut out too little our shot looked like it was not finished.  Our editing had to be precise in order to make our text look professional.
I also learned that although we had around 30 minutes of film on our camera, once we had edited our text came to around 20 seconds long.  It became clear that in order to have a 2 minute clip for our main task we would need to shoot a lot more, as editing takes away most of our film.

4) What are your overall impressions of the construction of your media text in your group?

I feel that our media preliminary text was a good learning curve as it allowed us to plan, film and edit a text without it being our final piece.  It meant that we learned how to time our text and how a lot of filming took up only a small piece of film.
I feel that our media text was of a good quality for a first time planning, filming and editing.  I was especially pleased with the editing as it allowed the whole group to help with the piece.
I feel that we worked well as a group, and this was probably down to our planning and pre construction before filming as it eliminated any debates during the construction and editing.

Prelim Task Questions

Which aspect of the planning stage did you find most valuable? Explain?

Individually i found the storyboard very helpful when planning our media production. It was very useful because it gave the sequence a direct routine which then made it easier when filming the clip. It was also very useful because it saved time and prevented us losing track of the certain tasks we had to achieve. It therefore came in great use when we were recording the sequence, it helped setup are set, certain camera shots, dialogue etc . Our Storyboard was especially helpful when filming our sequence for the second time, after accidently losing the first effort on the computer, because it then gave us guidance when filming again.

What did you learn about camerawork in the during the filming of the preliminary?

I learnt a lot about camerawork during the filming of our preliminary experiment. As the individual responsible for the actual filming, I learnt a great deal about the positioning and angles of the camera as well as the movement. The positioning is crucial and effects the whole clip, i also discovered that it requires a steady hand and great concentration to obtain a good clip.
